This is what adventurer had to say during it:
Often calling himself "no one of import", Darvin's life is less glamorous than it was when he fought in the Bloodsands, but still more eventful than the life he'd led before. The son of conjurers who'd escaped from the Azim Steppe's violent ways, the way blades clashed had called to him regardless. When calamity struck, he buried his grief in his training and competition, quickly becoming one of the most deft swordsmen Ul'dah had seen in years. After the call of the mothercrystal, though, it was clear his destiny lie elsewhere. Through his journeys, he met a number of companions that caused him to shine brighter than he ever had before. Finding himself with a family once more, and even rekindling his relationship with his estranged sister, things had finally begun to look up. Surprisingly, this was compounded with his meeting a man named Fray. The teachings of a Dark Knight were foreign to how he'd been raised all his life, but something about them felt... right. If anything, they stirred up the feelings he'd left by the wayside. All of the pain he'd felt in his life was brought to the forefront, and with Fray's instruction, and the help of the Dark Knights he'd met since, he knew once and for all that it was alright to let it out. This created a unique imbalance in Darvin's aether, though. He developed a tendency to switch between soul crystals almost instinctively. When collected and in control, people would see a Free Paladin, armor shining bright and shield brought to bear. But in times when his mind was in discourse, or when his passions would ignite, the Dark Knight came out to play. This nature of his caused many to call him the "Knight of Duality", a moniker he happily accepted and, over time, personified with a final technique. Sadly, a life of adventure is rarely ever a life without tragedy. So many companions he'd known, love, friendship, comradery, it all feels so frail in the face of staunch reality. His love? Fallen to an overabundance of aether. Friends? Literal worlds apart. Never to come back in the same way again. He'd had little family to begin with, and even that was scarce at best. After all his years of adventure and supposed heroism, Darvin Tallstag stood alone. Never by choice, but alone nonetheless. These days he spends his time with what remains of his vaunted comrades. A Free Company that accepts all who would come, both new and experienced alike. His efforts are for the sake of those who follow him, doing all he can to ensure that their lives are nothing like his. "No one of import", indeed.
