I understand now, why my mom said it was a comedy. Not like a real comedy, of course, but "more of a comedy, than horror". For me as a kid, the franchise was quite scary, though. Something reminded me of it (not the Black Phone 2), so I thought to rewatch all the movies, but... Won't be doing that. I was bored with the 1st one, did not really hook me. So bored, that I dropped it around 30 minutes in.
Don't get me wrong, I totally understand how the original span out a whole franchise (and not only movies!). But I am not sure the concept work that well today. Or maybe I just prefer something a bit more sophisticated and/or grounded. I think even Final Destination with all of its silliness is more to my taste now, because of its realism (and "supernatural" is almost non-existent there) and dynamics. Even Black Phone 2 worked better because of its pacing.
The character is still iconic, though. Simple design, simple background, simple rules. The status is well deserved.
